Decor like never before

Emily Scobbie & Cliff Bumgarner, of Jacksonville, Illinois, were one of the first couples to use the MacMurray College dining hall for their reception. I, personally, spent 4 years eating breakfast, lunch and dinner in this dining hall. I walked into this building the day of Emily & Cliff’s wedding and I didn’t recognize the place. It looked AMAZING. The florist had draped fabric between the chandlers, the chairs were covered, the water glasses had hot pink napkins in them! The place had been transformed into an elegant, beautiful hall worthy of a wedding reception.

I know a LOT of work went into the decorating. And Emily’s mom, Joni, was the orchestrator of it all. The place was transformed and Joni, with help from family & friends, gave her daughter a wonderful wedding gift.

Emily & Cliff's reception decorations were amazing - and the result of a lot of work by Emily, her mom, Joni, and many others. Here is a view of McClelland Dining Hall all decked out for the party.

Something for everyone

A couple of weddings we photographed recently have had special places for the kids to be … well, kids.

Emily Scobbie & Cliff Bumgarner provided their littlest guests with a room with snacks, movies, games and lots of little things to do while the "big kids" have their fun in the ballroom at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois.

Honoring married couples at your wedding

There are a few ways I’ve seen to honor other married couples during the course of your day.

One way is an anniversary dance during the reception. The DJ or band leader invites all married couples to the dance floor. During the course of the song, the couples are invited to sit down depending on how long they have been married. (“Couples who have been married 3 hours can sit down. Couples who have been married 5 years or less can sit down. Couples who have been married 10 years or less can sit down …”) until the couple married the longest is the only one left dancing. This couple is then asked how they  know the bride/groom and how long they have been married. They  might also be asked for marriage advice – which typically ends up with the husband advising the groom to learn quickly how to say, “Yes, Dear.”

As the bride, presenting the older woman with your bridal or toss bouquet is a good alternative to throwing it to eligible bachelorettes, especially if there are not many unmarried women on your guest list.

Another idea we saw for the first time at Jackie and James’ wedding was honoring couples at each table during the reception. Each table had a photo of one of the couples at that table with a write-up about them and why they were being honored. It was a great way to break the ice if those at the table don’t all know each other as well as a wonderful way to make others feel special during YOUR special day.

Busy mother of the bride

Pam Gaines not only helped her daughter, Kristen, plan for her wedding — she also made the decorations for Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and Gee Whillikers Banquet Hall. Pam also made necklaces for the bridesmaids, sashes for the dresses, decorated the wedding cake, and the list goes on.

Little brother

A funny moment during the dollar dance at Kristen (Gaines) Buchanan’s wedding . . .

First one up was her brother, Marc, who held aloft his dollar and made Kristen jump for it. After a swipe or two, he had his laugh. He handed over the bill, and the dance began.

Leo's Pizza, a reason to come back to Jacksonville

Julie (Surratt) Wilkinson was gracious enough to share her special day with her bridesmaid, Audrey Zeilman. It was Audrey’s birthday, and to mark the occasion she surprised her with a delivery from Leo’s Pizza! A neat idea and a great way to celebrate their history together.

Photos from the wedding are uploading now! Go to the Warmowski Photography web site, click on “See proofs from your event” and click on Julie & Phil’s name to see the images on Thursday.

Reception gone to the dog

Even though JJ, Julie & Phil’s Old English Bulldogge, couldn’t be part of the wedding day, in a sense he was part of the reception.

Each table at the reception hall, Hamilton’s 11o North East in Jacksonville, was adorned with a photo of JJ announcing the table number. The photo was cool, one I wish I would have taken.

Photos from the wedding are almost done! They’ll be linked from our web site on Thursday.

Turning the guests into a band to celebrate the marriage of Julie & Phil Wilkinson.

He’s a music man! A Wilkinson family tradition is to gather all the family, friends and guests around the dance floor and create a band — à la Professor Harold Hill in The Music Man — to serenade Julie and Phil, the new bride and groom.

The crowd was split up into piccolos, pianos, harps, drums and the like and performed under the direction of Phil’s Uncle Mike. He ended the performance with a swan dive off a chair — good thing Phil is a chiropractor, for he probably needed an adjustment in the morning.

Photo details: We like setting up lights around the dance floor to add more depth to the scene. We always try to use available light, but sometimes when it’s lacking we add our own. Just another way we at Warmowski Photography like to add a little extra to our wedding photography.

Special event, special dates

Genny & Ben Six were married earlier this year in White Hall. Genny had a great idea for her reception — she put out a calendar and asked all her guests to write in birthdays, anniversaries and other special dates. What a great way to keep track of family!

Event details: Ceremony at Christ United Methodist Church in White Hall with a punch and cake reception in the church hall. Reception to follow later this summer at Genny’s family farm.
