Vrooman Mansion in Bloomington great wedding location

Tiffany & I stopped in for a quick visit at the Vrooman Mansion in Bloomington last weekend while coming back from a wedding in the north Chicago suburbs (Lake Zurich).

The Vrooman Mansion is a great place for a small wedding or other special event. It’s located in the city’s historic Dimmitt’s Grove district on a tree-lined, paver brick street. The mansion is also a bed and breakfast, so you can reserve their rooms for yourself and others in the wedding.

We photographed the wedding of our friends Britt & Lloyd Young back in the day when we were newspaper photographers. They had their ceremony in one of the grand Victorian rooms on the main floor, food and reception in the other rooms and on the large porch, and really enjoyed the location. The owners Pan & Dana Kowalewski are great to work with.

Chicago wedding roundup

Tarts and more from Sugar Hills Bakery warmowskiphoto.com
Wedding sweets from Sugar Hills Bakery.

We’ve made two trips to the Chicago area for weddings in the past three weekends, and just wanted to make a compilation of some wedding tips and vendors contacts . . .

  • For our Lake Zurich, Illinois wedding we came across some awesome food from “Something’s Cooking” Ltd of Des Plaines. Chef Ken Larsen and Chef Jim Pascolla offer custom catering and events, and cooked up shish kebobs, tri-colored ravioli and macaroni & cheese that everyone was raving about. Neat thing about the food was it didn’t have to be hot to be good (guests nibbled all night long). Web link above of 847.298.5002.
  • For our wedding in Arlington Heights / Palatine / Schaumburg we were quite impressed at the offerings of Hotel Bollero (recently renamed from Hotel Indigo). The meal was very high class, staff very attentive – a nice boutique hotel. Options for bridal shower menu, rehearsal dinner, day-after brunch (Quinceañera, too!) 847.359.6900. Sales & catering “in.bassador” is Kasia Piotrowski x.1629.
  • The bride told Marta Kulach of Design de Flores “I want ivory roses and I love hypricum berries” – and she was off. Results were stunning. 773.704.8200.
  • Not only a great red velvet wedding cake, but a tasty selection of deserts from Sugar Hills Bakery. 847.658.8765 Algonquin 847.541.4800 Wheeling.
  • Very professional music from John Coyne, Absolute Disc Jockey Chicago 866.687.4248.

Western Illinois Youth Camp available for weddings

The Western Illinois Youth Camp in rural Jacksonville is available for outdoor weddings.

I took Tiffany along as my guest during a meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Jacksonville at the Western Illinois Youth Camp. We took a tour of the camp, located on the shores of Lake Jacksonville.

The camp is now available for outdoor weddings. They have a nice point that juts out into Lake Jacksonville, a large lawn area and some basic amenities. If you’re looking for an outdoor event location with more services, consider Buena Vista Farms.

Fantastic food … honestly!

Anne and Loren were married at Prairie Production in Chicago on Saturday, April 23, 2011. Their caterer was Honest Foods. The food was not only delicious – but beautiful as well! Check out the hors d’oeuvres as well as the dinner stations:  3 kinds of mashed potatoes, vegetables and meat.

Murphy – more than just a dog

Anne and Loren were married at Prairie Productions in Chicago on Saturday, April 23, 2011.

Murphy is Anne (and now Loren’s) dog. To say that he is an important part of their lives is probably an understatement. For him to be part of the wedding ceremony was a given.

Here is Murphy on his humans’ big day –

Murphy, waiting outside Anne’s bedroom door, wanted to be the first one to see her in her wedding dress.

Prairie Productions, the site of the wedding, is animal friendly and Murphy was welcomed with open arms.

Murphy ready for his role as ring bearer – actually bearing the rings.

Murphy laid quietly during the ceremony.

After the ceremony, Murphy hung out on the patio.

Anne & Loren – Wedding highlights

Anne & Loren were married Saturday 23 April 2011 at Prairie Productions in Chicago. It has been raining a lot here in the Midwest, so I was preparing myself all week for that possibility. No rain appeared! The day was absolutely beautiful in every way.

Here are some of our favorite details from their day.

Anne & Loren decided to see each other before the ceremony. They did so at a park right near their home.

Anne’s dog, Murphy was an important part of the day (click here for a post on Murphy)

Anne had help making all of the napkins (and decorating the favor boxes).

Loren’s mom, Sharon, and Anne take a peek at people arriving for the wedding.

Loren’s father, Rudy is an organist and musician. He brought a small pipe organ to Prairie Productions and played for the couple’s ceremony.

Anne didn’t choose dresses for her bridesmaids. She simply asked them to wear blue or green. They choose dresses that fit their styles and body types as well as budgets.

They had amazing desserts from Sweet Mandy B’s including macaroons and cupcakes.

The cake Anne & Loren cut was from a bakery & coffee shop they visited the morning of their wedding.

The couple decided on using iTunes for their music. They plugged into Prairie Production’s sound system and danced all night.

There is a great view of the skyline right outside Prairie Productions and we took advantage of it near the end of the night.

Congratulations to Anne & Loren and a beautiful wedding day! Wishing you a long and happy marriage!

Dreaming of the royal wedding

All the talk of the royal couple’s wedding is making us think of the wedding we photographed in England in 2008, how we met Carolyn & Daniel, and our Bacon Number of 2.

Tiffany & I ventured up to Waupaca, Wisconsin for the wedding of our friend (and Jacksonville Journal-Courier co-worker) Sada (Konkol) Reed. While at Sada & Jason’s wedding we hit it off with Carolyn & Daniel, her friends from the University of Saint Andrews in Scotland. They were planning their own wedding, and we threw out the suggestion we’d love to be their wedding photographers, and they thought that was brilliant!

Before I go on about their wedding — Sada, Carolyn & Daniel were classmates to Prince William, therefore by the Kevin Bacon Degrees of Separation, our number is 2.

Anyways, Carolyn is a native of Galesburg, Illinois and grew up in Saudi Arabia. She married Daniel in his hometown of Buxton, Derbyshire, England. It was fun to watch Daniel run around the Old Hall Hotel (he worked there as a teen). It was neat to see the English traditions like the ladies’ hats, the formal meal, “wedding breakfast” and even cutting the cake with a sword.

The event was not our first destination wedding. We’ve also done weddings in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; Mariestad, Västra Götaland, Sweden; and Las Vegas. I dream of photographing a wedding in Poland. And, one day we’ll set up our Tuscan wedding packages with our friend and fashion photographer Jerry Lee Ingram of Florence, Italy.

Back to our wedding from the United Kingdom, and some of our favorite photos of the trip:

Wedding at Inn At 835 Historic Hotel in Springfield Illinois

June & Brandon Stricker had their wedding ceremony at the Inn at 835 in Springfield Thursday, the 6th anniversary of their first date. Warmowski Photography

Tiffany and I were honored to photography the very intimate wedding ceremony of June & Brandon Stricker Thursday afternoon at the Inn at 835 in Springfield, Illinois.

The couple picked Thursday for their ceremony to mark the sixth anniversary of their first date. The witnesses and only guests were June & Brandon’s parents. A neat opportunity to provide wedding photography. Afterwards we took portraits at the capitol building/state house and at Springfield Union Station/Lincoln Presidential Library Visitor Center.

Ceremony by retired judge Hon. Roger W. Holmes as officiant— who said they were a great couple because a) they know how to compromise (moving to Springfield as a half-way point between families) and b) reacted with grace and fun when the ring didn’t slip onto Brandon’s finger.

The Inn at 835 is a historic hotel just off downtown Springfield. (We’ve photographed wedding receptions here before, then venue has nice event facilities). Here’s some of the details we photographed before the ceremony.

Processional tips via The Classic Harpist

Harpist seen through strings - WarmowskIPhotography.com
Devon Haupt of The Classic Harpist performs at the Jacksonville Bridal Expo earlier this year. She and her husband will be moving to Jacksonville soon.

Jacksonville (Illinois) native Devon (Carpenter) Haupt and her husband, Jeff, will be moving back to town from Chicago soon. They are both harpists, and travel all over the country performing at weddings and special events. They will soon be able to easily offer music at weddings in Springfield and all over Central Illinois, as well as the Chicago area and beyond.

They recently included tips for processionals on their e-mail newsletter (sign up at their web page The Classic Harpist).

It made us think of some of our own suggestions:

  • Slow – sometimes with all the attention your bridesmaids will speed down the aisle. Just remind them to slow down and enjoy the moment.
  • Stairs – with heels, always something to watch for. If the ceremony site has stairs be sure the groomsmen know to lend an arm. If the bridesmaids are meeting their groomsman on top, put the ushers to work to lend a hand as the ladies ascend.
  • Coordinator – it helps to have a traffic cop to tell people when it is their time to go. It’s nice to have some assurance it’s the right time to go.
  • Flowers – keep the bouquet down and don’t try to hide behind the flowers.

Children can be unpredictable - Logan had enough of the heat and his tux just as it was his time to go down the aisle. The groom had to retrieve his pillow (with the real rings). Photo by Tiffany.

Here’s tips from The Classic Harpist (with your musician in mind):

  1. Have a rehearsal.  This gives your bridal party a chance to know where to stand, when to move, and it also allows them to find the venue prior to your wedding day!
  2. Start your rehearsal with everyone in place at the front.  From there, it is easier to walk out in order, and keep everyone in place to practice the processional.
  3. If your wedding is outdoors, be sure the aisle is free of anything that could be a tripping hazard.  If the ground is muddy, consider moving inside ~ high heels sink!  You might also want to avoid using an aisle runner.  They can mask holes and dips in the ground, and are difficult to walk on if the ground is uneven.
  4. If you do not have a coordinator (either provided by the church/venue or hired on your own), designate someone to get the bridal party lined up and sent down the aisle.  This person should also cue your musicians when everyone is ready, so that the music you selected can be played at the right time.
  5. Place your musicians somewhere they can see the processional (the front & back of the aisle) when the bridal party is in place.  If I can’t see what is happening, I can’t make the music fit perfectly!
  6. Remind your bridal party to smile!
  7. Have a designated time when each member of the bridal party starts their walk down the aisle (when the person in front of them gets to the third row, etc.).
  8. The bride does not follow tip #7.  The musicians will be watching for the last member of the wedding party to get into place, and then will change the processional music for the bride.  Listen for this change before you enter.  Your musicians have a good view of the ceremony, and will know when everyone is lined up and ready for your entrance.  Wait for it!
  9. Kids are unpredictable.  If you are having young children in your wedding party, be prepared to be upstaged!  This can be a good thing (super cute) or a bad thing (temper tantrum).  If the kids are overwhelmed by the attention, they may not walk down the aisle the way they practiced the day before.  Have a parent close by to help them along or take them out of the processional if they just aren’t able to do it.
  10. Breathe – and walk slowly!  This is the moment you’ve been waiting for.  Take your time as you walk down the aisle, and make eye contact with your groom.  The parents should stand to signal to the guests when they should rise for the bride’s entrance.

A little bit more about the school: Jacob Tucker plays for Illinois College, a small liberal arts college that’s been highly ranked as a top small school and a great value in education. The team plays in the Bruner Fitness and Recreation Center — the main goal is promoting wellness on campus, but also hosting great facilities for basketball, volleyball, track, swimming and other sports. Best of luck to Jacob in the contest. And good job getting all the exposure for Illinois College.
